Darren, is there any other benefit to using a hot paper clip? (Cauterizing / sterilizing the nail?)  

I've always used a welding torch tip drill (AKA: a pin vice) and a tiny drill bit (cleaned with alcohol) that is turned with the good fingers on the other hand.

 Light pressure, go slow, and as soon as it breaks through the nail... spurt!

The last time I drilled a finger nail to let off the blood pressure I did more damage tightening the vise on the finger.

Blame yourselves. You guys pushed me to post a picture. I told you it was nothing to look at. I don't care what it looks like, it still hurt like hell getting forcefully wedged between the side of the workbench the the elevator door. And it's had two days to heal so there.

Willie, There would be some protection form infection but it is more likely the fact that paper clips are cheap, readily available and disposable.

However, in Ed's case there would be no need to actually do any more than apply one of these:



I won't actually do anything but generally reassures the patient that you have done something for them and that all will be well.  Of course, if he didn't cry or carry on like a pork chop he may actually get a lollipop for being a brave lad

In all seriousness Ed, glad it's not worse but I know all too well how much even that can hurt. I haven't done it in a while, but I well recall the throbbing, then the sensitivity that lasts far too long, and the anxiety of waiting to see if it recovers intact or if you have to start growing a new one. When that happens its a tough thing for months.
