Floor mats

i dont have any of the open mats but i would think that they would be hard on the knees if you had to kneel on one.

I gave up on using any form of matting. With soft matting the swarf just got embedded in it and was very difficult to remove, and with hard matting the swarf lay on top and stuck to my shoes..
I made some wooden duck-boards instead, they're comfortable to stand on, and the swarf just drops through.

Better get on top of that John or she will make you strip off in the shop and do the nudie run to the house. I can't see that being fun in a Northern winter!

I have industrial grade mats in front of my lathe. They are smooth, not ribbed like the Costco mats so they are easy to clean and they are made of rubber, not vinyl so they are durable as heck. I've had the same mats for over 20 years and they still look good. The 2x5 size is good because they are big enough to stand on and small enough to move around when you sweep.

I wonder if old conveyor belt would be 'soft' enough to provide any benefit over the concrete floor? I have a roll 5' wide down the side of the shed.

Conveyor belt is very dense I doubt you would realize any relief from the hard floor at all.
