Okay, Where Is It

Al - I missed your post when responding to Ed's

I also have a comment box for each tool, into which you can keep a record of loan in/out.  Less likely to be accidently rubbed off of a white board.  Also useful for service/repair history or keeping a list of consumable items.

Aside from the search engine, one of the most used features that I built into the database is the ability to link to documents such as user manuals, exploded diagrams, parts lists etc.  Whenever I get a tool or piece of equipment that has documentation, I scan it and save it.  No more lost, torn or soiled pages to deal with.

EDIT: I've removed the link to the manual, as I realised that I needed to update it.  I also need to update the database files as well.  I had forgotten that I had made some minor adjustments.  I'll do this over the next couple of days.

I had opened 4 of them out to 5/8", 4 of them out to 3/4" and left 2 of them stock for 1/2" and the last 2 had been modified to hold small boing bars (in a tube). I'm beginning to think I need a inventory clerk.

I'll use the additional blocks, eventually,

on a side note

Its been 2 weeks, apparently the guy who said he would be right over, to buy the Millermatic 175, mig welder, is not coming. So Monday, I will disassemble the package and put it into storage.

Jack,

A suggestion for the Millermatic , before you unpack it, why not try to list it over at the Welding Web. I see used equipment all the time listed.

Mayhem, sounds like you have much more orderly personality traits than your internet handle might indicate.   Rotfl

It's actually quite a good idea to somehow record the contents of your shop for insurance purposes.

A friend of mine who is past retirement age has suggested going through the shop with a video camera and verbally identifying all of the tools and their purchase prices both for insurance valuation, and when for when he goes to the big chip bin in the sky, and his widow has to dispose of the shop.

Al - that is the reason that I decided to share it. I didn't think anyone would really be interested in it, as it is quite an investment in time to log everything you have. Once in place though, it is easy to add the new items. Then one day there was a thread on another site about a machinist dying and his family not knowing what to do with his stuff and certainly no idea of what it was and what it was worth. A number of members commented that they would leave their family in the same situation should their number come up. So, I offered it as a possible solution. I'm really not sure how many people have actually implemented it but it works for me.

Some minor changes have been made to the database and are reflected in the revised manual, both of which can be accessed HERE
