Here's a good document on bearing tolerances.

I used an engine hoist to flip mine over in order to clean the ways, piece of cake.

Nope - the vendor IS Amazon. ("Sold by, and ships from Amazon.com") We only buy items from third party vendors as a last ditch, no other choice, thing. They take their good sweet time (in most cases) to ship anything, and we have to pay the shipping on anything that isn't PRIME eligible. So when Amazon says THEY sell it, and have it IN STOCK, that means it is (supposed to be) sitting on a shelf in one of their warehouses. And if it's on the shelf, that means I get guaranteed two day delivery with PRIME. So when they tell me it's not going to be delivered until a month later, that tells me the shelf is actually empty and their inventory count is wrong. Like I said before, SOMEBODY at Amazon screwed up, plain & simple.

In this case it worked out OK (more or less) because thanks to one of Sunset's posts I have discovered there is a Motion Industries branch here in this area. They gave me an estimated delivery on the Timkin bearings I ordered of February 12th. I emailed the local branch asking if I could set them up as my default for ordering, because the web site set me up with a branch in Alabama instead. The manager said he would take care of it, and "Oh, by the way.... I'm having your bearings shipped overnight to us here and then I'll get them out to you. Jawdrop

I got the bearings on Friday - a full week ahead of their quoted delivery date. Needless to say I think I found a new supplier. THANKS SUNSET! Cool

Been there done that. We call and complain every time a package doesn't show up now. They extend your PRIME account and give you a free month when they deliver late. I think we've got 8 months worth of free service right now. Big Grin

I had forgotten about my order until now. I suppose that's part of their master plan. Smile

I'm afraid I may have to retract that statement. After several emails back and forth with the manager of the local branch, he told me that he would set it up so that all my orders would be shipped over-night to his branch where I could pick them up myself. I placed another order two days ago and again, checking my account on-line I see they still show them coming out of the Alabama branch with a two week delivery time.   Bash

I got my mill all back together after replacing the drive spindle bearings and finally installed the MachTach RPM/SFM digital display. At first I thought I had a problem with the tachometer reading because is was showing the RPM was 300 revs OVER what is shown on speed placard attached to the mill head.  Jawdrop

I got out my cheapo import hand held laser tach and it was spot on with the MachTach. I know the hand held is accurate because it is spot on to my lathe tach too and I double checked them with a mechanical tach as well. The thing is I can actually hear the the mill is running faster than it used to. Or maybe it's just in my head because the the belt drive is actually quiet now!   Big Grin

Unfortunately it's so quiet now that I can hear the spindle bearings singing a bit. And my drive spindle modification didn't fix my stick-slip issue on the quill. So now I've pulled the quill out looking for that problem, and my shop press is sitting right there, and.....  Blush  yes, I've pulled out the spindle and have new bearings on order for that too. (See the top of this post.)   Bash

The cut outs in the mill head (quill bore) for the quill pinion and depth indicator block are razor sharp and haven't been chamfered or de-burred. (Think 2-stroke cylinder bore.) So I'm going to do that and shine the quill and bore just a very little bit. I also need to check out the straightness of the spindle itself, but it looks good to the nekid eye. Will see what one of my Interapid DTI's have to say about it. Ever forward......

You're talking about the Fafnirs by Timken? It must be your turn in the barrel!
