It may be beneficial if Ken could tell us how his rack was made.

Darren, any idea how much angle iron it takes - rough guess

Roughly 67 feet Dave, assuming I didn't make any addition errors.

Thanks Ed,
I have some 40 x 3 angle iron not enough for the whole rack though. I have some 32 x 3 angle and a whole lot of 25 and 32 square tube. Trying to see what I have can be used without it looking a total mess. DaveH

If it comes out a total mess, call it art.

Bed rails from the dump.
Free advice is worth exactly what you payed for it.

I'm a long length of 40 x 3 angle short, so I was trying to use what I have. For the two sloping angle irons I thought I could use 32 square tube, fixing it flat on, but it ends up skew because of the thickness of the angle rear frame. Altering the design a touch will get rid of the skew but then the angles that hold the shelves (the 6 outer ones) are skew.
I could 'notch' the tubing - not the best thing to do. So I'm still in the 'thinking mode' and it is not going well Also I can't quite see where the top angle iron goes is it fixed to the rear angle iron or to the sloping angles? But apart from that it's going like a Boeing DaveH

I didn't mean that, I meant which bit is welded to which bit. eg the top angle iron I can't see exactly where that is welded. Also the sloping angle is it cut at the top to fit, or is the rear upright angles cut so the sloping angle fits? I think it is so well designed to use only one eighth thick angle iron. If one looks at it closely it is nearly impossible to find a fault with it and whoever designed it did it really well. DaveH |
