Today's tool gloat
#1
Every once in a while I hit it right, today was one of those days. I met up with a tool salesman friend of mine, he had told me he was cleaning out some samples he'd been holding onto for too long. Here's what I got for $100, all brand new/never used:

2 Nicholson 9-piece file sets, both with one file missing. Only the 10" half-round made in Brazil, all others made in USA. (Nicholson no longer made here in USA.)
4 packages of 6 each, 1/2" black oxide HSS Jobber length drills, Precision Twist Drill Co, all made in USA.
2 - Walton 4" tap extensions, for 1/4" taps.
1 - Brubaker 7/8-9 UNC HSS spiral point tap
2- Prototyp Protodyn Inox 7/8-9 UNC spiral flute taps, for stainless steel
1 - Greenfield 7/8-9 UNC 4-flute plug hand tap
2 - Greenfield 1/2-20 UNF sprial flute bottoming taps, for stainless steel, 6" OAL
3 - Nicholson 10" Second Cut 3/8" square files
1 - Proto 30mm Jam Nut Wrench
1 - Proto 5 piece Flex-Head Hex driver set
10 - Valenite VLTK 3R grade 5410 threading inserts
1 - Valenite VG112 R 16-30 insert groove/cutoff holder (1" shank, RH)
5 - Valenite VTG 3.0 N 30 GG grade 5820 grooving/parting inserts (3m wide)
1 - Unknown make M20 x 2.5 thread die
1 - Lyndex R8-3/4" collet
1 - Pferd 4" diameter 240 grit flap wheel, thread hub style
1 - TNMA 666F grade LP2 insert, going to my scrap carbide pile because no one could use an insert that big!

I'm keeping one of the file sets, one pack of 1/2" drills, one of the 3/8" square files, both Prototyp taps, the Brubaker tap, the Proto tools, half of the VLTK 3R inserts, 1 of the 1/2-20 taps.

I'm going to offer up 10 of the 1/2" drills, as these are "certified gold" because they (PTD Co.) no longer makes them in the US and quality has suffered.

My good friend Darren gets first refusal on the remainder, and I'll hold it until he comes here so he can see it before we ship it back to AUS.

Trust me Darren, you'll definitely want the set of files, a pack of 1/2" drills, and perhaps the Grooving/cutoff toolholder and inserts. PM me with what you do think you'll want and anything you definitely don't want. I'll put aside the stuff on your list and work up a price.

I was not aiming to make this political, Mike. The folks in Brazil work hard and the files made there are good. The problem now is that Nicholson now makes them in China where the quality of the raw material is suspect and the files just don't last as long.
