I'm trying to make use of vertical space in my shop and now that I know how the hoist fits, I'm going to move my tool boxes to the wall in front of the hoist. Above that, I am going to put two shelves (300mm deep), and above those I will have rack space.
Eventually, I plan to push that whole back wall out a further 3m, so I screwed the vertical sections in place, rather than weld them. Here the two rear horizontal sections are welded in place, ready for the projections, to give the depth. I like using cope joins when welding angle and today I decided to cut these on the mill. Whilst it did take a little longer, there was much less mess than using a cutting disc in the 4" angle grinder. The vise stop saved a hell of a lot of time, once the first one was set up. ø1.375 six flute HSS cutter running at 200 rpm taking a full 3mm (.060") cut.
I've got a heap of industrial shelving that was given to me but the problem is that the shelves are 600mm deep and for a lot of what I want to put on shelves, this is wasted space. 300mm will be ample for those boxes of screws, o rings, roll pins etc that you only need once in a while.
