Spindle Tach

I was wondering if anybody out there knows of a tach set up that I could use on a Grizzly G8689 mini mill. I would like to have a general idea of my spindle RPM. I know what the manufacturer says the ranges are between for both high and low gears, but the adjusting knob seems to be a bit 'touchy' in a couple of areas. Really don't think that it is bad enough to replace.

you could get a hand held one to check it with, Steward Warner makes an analog one that you hold against the shaft end

This is a few years ago (maybe 20) but Red Lion Controls used to sell a niftyLCD readout tac that would couple with a sensor easily mounted anywhere convenient on the spindle.
I installed one on my Hendey lathe.

Except that, the last I heard, the MachTach was/is out of production for an indefinite amount of time. (I have one myself.) That Tachulator looks real comparable both in price and function though.

The guy I got my mill from actually made one from scratch I'll see if I can post a pics pic it's not mounted yet he put it on because he converted it from a 3 phase to a 1 phase 220 1HP DC variable speed

I'm very happy with mine. Its nice to know what the actual RPM is when you find the sweet spot for a nice surface finish, and you can jot it down for later reference.

I have a tach rpm metyer I bought off e-bay they are often on there comes from China. They often sell for 20 to 30 bucks, I bid on one and got it for about 10 bucks, I take a battery aand comes in a vinyl pouch about 1 inch x5x3. All that is involved in using is to tape a small retroreflective strip on whatever you want to measure, pointing it as you would with an infrqred thermometer and reading the display. Excellent for the price and one can check the rpm of anything that turns. tom

It's true that availability varies. The guy selling them does it for a hobby so he doesn't always have them in stock. I have one on order and was told he should have some more in stock in the next couple of weeks. I know the design is solid so I'm willing to be patient and wait until he gets more in. That doesn't help anyone that needs one right now though.
