Louis Levin and Son Staking set

I was helping my mom (97 years old!) clean out some stuff and came across this item.  She told me to "get it out of here", but I couldn't bear the thought of tossing it out.  

   

   

   

   


Does anyone have any idea what this is worth?  I have no use for it; I'm not really even sure what it is used for, except I know my Dad used it to repair watches.  I'd like to sell it, but I can only find two examples on eBay, and although one has some people watching it, I don't think there's been any activity.

It would be a shame to toss it out. If it were me and I couldn't get anyone to buy it, I'd offer it for free just so it wouldn't end up in the landfill.

I joined a couple of horology groups on FB and posted it there seeking information. Two different places gave me estimates of $250-$350. An incomplete set has been on eBay for about a month for $345 plus shipping and shows minor corrosion on the stand thing. I listed it on FB marketplace for $400, we'll see if anyone bites.

You obviously don't know my family creed: never throw anything away. As an example, while helping mom, she handed me my kindergarten report card from 1965. No idea why she would save such a thing.

Those watchmaker tools cost a fortune when they were originally purchased. Thing is how many kids today would have any interest what so ever in becoming a watchmaker? The only folks that would have any interest are old guys that are becoming just as rare as the tools themselves.

I haven't worked on a vehicle with a points type ignition system in decades, yet I still have a dwell meter in my tool box along with a timing light. You never know.

After listing it on FB marketplace, I got some interest and finally, an offer. $350, and he's supposed to pick it up Thursday. Yeah, I could have held out for more, or shopped it around on various sites to squeeze a higher price out of it. But I don't have any skin in this game, and I'd just as soon be rid of it.

I think $350 is a good price , I have the same set got it free when I purchased a Pultra 17/70 lathe he said did I want it as well because he was throwing it in or chucking it in the skip so I said I would have rather than it going in the skip as i restore antique clocks I use it quite regularly.
