No Name Cross Vise
#1
The castings on this vise are actually not bad at all considering it's a no name brand. As usual though, it's loaded with grinding dust and needs a fair amount of attention with a file to deburr it.

I'm impressed. It looks like they put a little bit of effort into finishing that one even if they don't clean them up after grinding. I've seen far worse that's for sure.

Got it cleaned and deburred. It could use some work to make it smoother to operate. Putting thrust bearings behind the handles would help immensely. Just like the compound on a mini lathe. Fairly smooth in one direction but tight in the other direction. The acme screw for the vise jaw could use to be replaced. It's very sloppy and roughly made. It's a rare beast though at 5/8-4 thread. I couldn't find that combination anywhere. 5/8-6 is the coarsest I found. I could attempt to make one using the mini lathe but I'm not sure if it's up to the loads that would be put on it.  Chin

I went through that with the lead screw in my lathe tail stock. Metric diameter with an imperial pitch.  Bash
I just bought a slightly larger diameter of imperial acme rod (standard dimensions) and a new bronze nut and turned them to fit the tail stock.

I'm considering doing the same thing but I'll need a mill to complete the task so it'll be a while. The vise will work as is for now. It's certainly better than no cross vise.

I need to do this to make mine a smoother movement, just replace the lead screw.     When you guys say thrust bearing, are you just meaning a bronze shim to take the slop out?  Right?    Your not actually using a roller bearing, are you?

I haven't done the mod yet, but what I was talking about was a needle-roller thrust bearing.
