Since I work in the medical industry, I have access to centrifuge vials and use these to store my inch taps. I made an insert for a filing cabinet drawer.

schor, I saw those the other day, but I wasn't thinking about what to use them for. Good idea.

most of my pipe taps won't fit in one of those trays

I use the containers end mills come in. Since I have access to a shop, they're free. I tape two together; one for the tap, one for the drill. Write the size on the side in big characters.
Contact a local machine shop and ask. Chances are, they throw out a handful every week. Most places are happy to give them to you for free.
Full of ideas, but slow to produce parts
