punch press

Scored on craigslist Monday night.
Throat is 12 1/2" from back to tooling.
This press does incline but is not open in the back.
Kenco model 5NR
serial DNR212-659
I talked to Kenco and the lady said the 5 is tons
 she's not sure on the NR
and the 659 on the serial # means made in 6 of 1959

After wiring, we made a test run and the press worked great.
Using one of the Unipunches that came with the press, we punched 1/2 holes in
16 gauge with no problems at all.
Next, I want to build a guard around the contact point where the punch hits the unipunch.
(Leaving no open contact point)

Never be it me that questions the need for a new tool!

I dig punch presses because they will make hole shapes which no other machine can make (for example, truly pointy-cornered triangles or stars -- just have to make the die for it.

So, what is your planned use for this tool?

No real plan as of now.
The press came up on craigslist for cheap.
When I can own a machine like this for $300 its a no brainer.
I buy tools and than learn how to use them
I never ran a lathe until I bought one.
Never ran a punch press till this week.
I would like to build parts or invent something.
In the end it all takes tools and machines.
I don't want to sub out anything.

Good idea.  BTW, once you've invented your brainchild, sell it to a large US manufacturer such as Channel Lock so they can beat back the cheap knock-offs.

I tend to agree with your outlook. You'll find that certain tools play nice with other tools. With the punch, you'll want to get a surface grinder for finishing punches & dies.

A surface grinder is on my hit list of tools to find.
First I have a deal going to trade a Jet 10x24 lathe.
for a 7" Ammco Shaper and atlas horizontal mill in Jan 2016.
Been chasing the shaper for some time.
The atlas has a bunch of gear cutters with it.
I'm hoping the cutters have a 1" hole so they can be used on
My Diamond Horizontal mill

I have a 7" Rhodes which I almost never use, but when I do, it's usually the only tool I have which will do the job (under power, at least). I love it for keyways and square inside corners. :)

If I had room at the inn, I'd invite a Horizontal mill to visit and stay a while.
