You can get a 1 ton arbor press like that from Harbor Freight for about $30. That pic looks like it's the HF press. I have the 1/2 ton version.

I've cut plenty of gear racks on a vertical mill using a horizontal milling attachment.  If that is not available check on the availability of spur gear racks from Boston Gear.  I purchased spur gear blanks from BG when I was rebuilding my vertical mill power feed unit and did not yet have the capability to cut gears.  BTW, it was much cheaper than buying the necessary gear cutters.

thanks something to think about . Now i have a good idea what ill do when i get to that project . Btw im taking on as a project and want to make the tool and part, than heat treat na i dont wnat to buy and parts esp for the free cheapo press that it is
..Looks like i have two options and both will work . Onc is to bolt stock on fixture / angle plate mill vertically. ill prob cut in mill with fly cutter rotate mill head 90 deg. Most likely ill cut similar to a large deep acme thread i once cut on lathe. Ill cut to full depth with one tool than come back with and cut the sides with a finishing tool.
thanks again for the ideas

While it's true that cutting a long rack on a vertical mill with a fly cutter is difficult because of interference with the head, it's not impossible.

I've never done this, but it's possible to hold the rack vertically, tilt the head to 30*, and grind your fly cutter with the correct shape to include the 30* offset. The rack should miss the head.

That's an excellent idea.   Thumbsup
