Elliott Concord 460 lathe

I spent a couple of hours cleaning up the area that I have sectioned off to put my lathe and mill into.  The new lathe is a bit longer than my current lathe but it will fit.  All I have to do now is move my mill back into the other corner, where I originally had it

This is the entrance to the sectioned off area.  It is 1800mm wide and I'm hoping that it will be sufficient to wrestle the lathe through.  If not, I will have to dismantle one of the shelving bays that forms the partition.

   

The lathe will live along this wall.  I'm thinking about taking it almost all the way to the end, to maximize access to the headstock and allow stock to protrude further out the rear of the spindle.

   

The mill will move back into the other corner.  I'm not sure where the brown cupboard will go and it may have to move out of this section.  The worse part is that I pretty much had is set up just the way I wanted and then had to empty it out to move it!

   

I also took the opportunity to paint the short section of chipboard white. It was originally blue and I didn't paint it before as the cupboard covered most of it. Also, I found out that I didn't have enough paint to do two coats. Perhaps that was my initial reason...

Great find Darren, we'll be anxiously looking forward to your precise progress reports & pics.

On a contrary note, I'm planning to divest myself of my 16x60 lathe probably due to the difference in our ages.

OK - been thinking about the layout and I've changed my mind.  I think that the footprint of this lathe is going to leave me a little cramped for space between the lathe and the mill.  Further, to work on it I need unobstructed access to the rear, which isn't going to be easy with it parked up against the external wall.  


So the solution (I hope) is to remove the shelving that forms the wall between the bay that I want to keep these machines in and the remainder of the shop.  The headstock will be about 1200mm to 1500mm (47" to 59") from the rear wall.  The tailstock end will take up the current opening, so the space at the headstock end will become the doorway between the two spaces.  Should I need to turn a long piece, I can always make an access hole through the back wall, as there is nothing but space behind there.  However, with two steady rests, I think that wont be too common a problem.

I hope to move the rest tomorrow night and break down the framework either tomorrow or Thursday night (working late Wednesday).  Once the space is cleared, the lathe will be positioned so that a stud wall can be built with the outside flush with the expansion line in the concrete floor.  The wall will be constructed so that I have access doors to get to the access panels on the back of the lathe.

The problem is trying to find room to stick all the crap that I moved.  I really need to be ruthless when I tidy up and toss more stuff.  Some of it needs to go on eBay and the like as well.  Eventually I want a two post hoist to go into the centre bay.  I also want to extend the rear wall on the second and third bays back another 3m.  Due to rock, I cannot extend the "machine shop" bay out.

The good news is that the mill doesn't have to be moved

A little more progress tonight. The racking is down and Thursday and Friday evening will be spent moving all the crap off of the floor and out of the way.

   
   

Now wasting the remainder of the evening looking for MT5 adapters, as we get screwed for the cheap ones over here...

This is going to be exciting to watch the progression of getting the new machine in, cleaning it up, fixing the few issues and tooling it up to MAKE CHIPS. Big ones, and in a hurry.
