Carbide ONLY on the diamond wheel. If you want to grind HSS as well, get a white wheel for the other side.

Willie,

Thanks for the excellent advice.

I will plead ignorance ... in this case a very legitimate plea ... but what is a "white wheel"? I assume it is a composite wheel that is white, but a composition of what?

Thanks,
Arvid

No problem. It is probably common knowledge but I seem to lack both lately.

Do you have a recommended grit or grits for an Aluminum Oxide wheel for HSS bits?

I believe Aluminum Oxide would be the description from a reckognized abrasives manufacturer. "white wheel" is more likely the term used by places like Horror Fright, as even they probably don't know what the composition of their product actually is. Rotfl

Arvid, I have a 60 grit Alu Ox wheel and I really appreciate how it works on HSS. So much better than the greyish mystery abrasifs that come with the grinders.
I'm was planning on getting a 100 or 120 grit wheel to use as a "Finishing wheel" but maybe I should go right to 220?

The green ones that came with my HF grinder certainly match that description.

Arvid, I am using a 46 grit wheel on the grinder for roughing out HSS tool blanks. And even that seems to take forever. Angel

For finishing and touch-up I use my belt sander which usually has a 180 grit belt on it. I have finer grit belts as well but they never seem to make it onto the grinder. Blush

If I had the room and the money, I would have a second grinder with finer wheels instead. Happyyes

The green wheels that came with my grinder looked like they were made from the stuff that gets washed out of a cement mixer at the end of the day, with a little Krylon thrown on for color. Blink
Those went straight from the box to the trash can.

It's difficult to find a variety of grits of AO grinding wheels to fit these grinders. I think mine is also 46 grit. That's the only one I could find.

MSC has an 80 grit wheel, but now that you mention it - I don't recall seeing anything finer. Chin
