Chuck,
Can you run the test again but put your meter right on the Atmel pin for the direction signal and see what it does? Ed

The Uno's have surface mount ships and I am afraid of shorting something.

I am worn out by this problem. I have started working on a sketch to input the # of divisions from a 4x4 keypad and will add that to Chuck F's sketch.
I am going to take a break from this for a while to let my head clear. I need to make chips or cast something. I thank you all for the help and all your efforts in fixing this problem. Later. Chuck
