Can 304 or 316 SS be stick welded - Is one easier than the other?
Is it difficult to do?

I've only stick welded 316 Dave but it was like spreading butter. Nicest met I ever welded. Tig is the same.
Free advice is worth exactly what you payed for it.

Found some stainless steel flat bar 30 x 3mm it's 304 they don't stock 316 flat bar.
I assume 304 welds the same as 316 is that a reasonable assumption?

What sort of welding rods do I need. Can I just ask for some welding rods for 304.?

Hi,
316 will weld 304 stainless stock quite ok

Given that your  end application is suitable for your 304 -  no problems.

Its only when you have immersion in seawater or something corrossive that you will get corrosion at the weld bead interface .  If its just outside use it will be ok .

Thanks Oz,

At the moment I am one mile above sea-level however with global warming I'm hoping I will be next to the sea soon. Big Grin
