I'm not sure what you mean by a cut off saw but if you're talking about an abrasive cut off saw, you'd be better off getting one of the many 5 x 6 metal cutting band saws. That's assuming you don't already have one. Smiley-gen163

Funny you guys mention abrasive cutoff saws. Just yesterday my "future daughter-in-law" and son were working on their soon-to-be home (where my shop is) and Stephanie needed a metal rod to support some part of her freshly pruned rose bush. My son Brian started heading into the shop. saying "I'll just cut it on the bandsaw". I stopped him and explained that cutting a Ø 3/16" 1018 CRS rod with a 4/6 mixed tooth saw blade would be a great way of making a skip-tooth blade and mashed rod.

So I recalled that my dad had stashed a 14" abrasive chop saw in the woodworking shop. I climbed over the crap lying all over and dug it out from under a cluttered workbench. It worked PERFECT for the job. I'm so glad we have it, and equally glad I even remembered it was there. No place to put it in my shop right now, but handy enough that I'm going to find or create a new spot for it.

I'm not saying an abrasive cut off saw is not useful. Just that if I only could have one it would be the band saw. Smiley-gen163

I have both and both have come in very handy. It's just the sparks and stuff from the abrasive I prefer to use it only outside.

Agreed! Exactly what we did, and what I would do in the future. They have their place, and it's under the bench until you haul it outside to use it.

With a bandsaw, which I also prefer for 95% or more of what I cut, the most common failure of a pricey blade is too few "teeth in the cut" or too many. It can be a PITA to change the blade for a cut that takes 5 seconds with an abrasive chop saw. The one I have appears to be a Harbor Freight cheapie, but it works for the few times a year I'll need it.

If I could only go with one - I'd probably go the abrasive saw.

I've only got one and yes it is the abrasive cut-off saw. I mounted it to the wall a few years ago and made a mitre table for it, it gets a lot of use and makes a LOT of mess. I'm sure the neighbours love the sound of it late at night too. I'd like to replace it with a bandsaw or a power hacksaw and just pull it out when needed, that's another thing on the list...

I have this one from HF. http://www.harborfreight.com/horizontal-...93762.html Had it for a few years now and it hasn't failed me. One thing I did do tho is put wood on the bottom of the front and back legs and mounted better wheels on it and spaced them further out. Made it much more stable. I'll post pics later, got a helluva headache right now (shingles).
