It's a good feeling to get the shop cleaned up to that level. I completely empty mine out once a year and re-organize it. Since space is at a premium, that time is also used to purge unused stuff.

Today I worked in cleaning out the "previous" shop my dad had set up in the basement of the original portion of the house. It was in even worse shape than the newer shop! Only about halfway through it, my sister and I put out 8 big trash bags and recycled a load of clothing that filled her Toyota Prius. I found some interesting things in there, among which are two Craftsman (Sears Roebock & Co. brand) tool kits. One is a pipe die set for NPT threads from 1/8-27 to 1-1/2"-11-1/2. The other is an incomplete set of taps, dies and holders for 1/2-13 to 1-8 straight threads. There are dozens of boxes of different wood screws, found more files and some antique dividers that match the outside caliper that's hanging on a hook in my shop. I'mtrying to figure out where to put all the stuff I found! I want to move it an sell off the workbench in there that my maternal grandfather had made sometime around 1940. Cleaning it all out will allow me to make the "in-law" apartment (flat) next to my shop just a little bigger. One problem I have there is the old boiler for the steam heat in the house. It's referred to here as a "snowman" because its shaped like one and is cover in....asbestos. That one is going to cost a small fortune to upgrade, though I don't know if it's worth doing because its so efficient after being converted to running on natural gas that it heats the house for about $400 per year.

Me, I have a workshop bench in my walk-in cellar at home that looks similar to the one you prefer, full of all kinds of tools. I clean it up about once every year, and it's due again. I should take some photos of that one before & after too! I will be clearing out a lot of space in my cellar as that's where the shop at my mom's home may be moved to within a couple of years. It would be nice to be able to hit the machine shop without driving 7-1/2 miles. Too bad my cellar doesn't have windows like the current shop does....yet. One thing I don't know if I want to give up is that I have two big shelving units in there. Both are 6 feet (just under 2m) tall, and have 3 shelves that are 4 feet (1.22m) wide. One is 8 feet (2.44m) long, the other 6 feet long. They hold a LOT of stuff, but take up a lot of space.

I would be too embarrassed to take any photo's of my workshop at the moment.
I keep saying I must give it a good clean out ............ but that's as far as it gets. One day .............. DaveH |
