Well I just messed about today , cleaning the shop .


Decided  I am going make an  extraction hood  for the forge ,so I dug out this heating fan from the loft . 




It shifts a fare old bit of air , only thing is the motor is in the wrong place for my needs . So I removed the motor ,stripped the motor and swapped the field coils around 
so the motor would spin in the opposite direction ,and mounted the motor on the other side of the fan case . 




Being on the outside with little air flow for cooling I ran it for a couple of hours to see if it would overheat ,its was fine peak temp was 65c , time to come up with a hood design .

Rob, Are you going to put the fumes directly through the fan? most flue assisters I have seen blow into a tee across the top of the fume inlet and extract by venturi effect. Mind you, you will get psoitive fume extraction and if the hood is a fair bit above the forge it will draw enough cooler air in to keep the fan and duct fairly cool. I am going to have to do something along these lines for mine. Good to see it lit, and glad it didn't put the fire all over the shop. Of course the whole groupwill want a video of it when it's finished! You can often find that woodburner suppliers sell thin (around 1") firebrick in flat sheets to cut up, you could make a lining with that. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DIY-FIRE-BRICK...1259107303

Yes I will be sucking the fumes through the fan , It will be drawing from a  600x600 hood so I reckon it will survive    , cheers for the link mate

Decided to do a bit work on the forge today , welded some very old and rusty steel onto the stand for feet . 






and decided to cut a section of the hearth away  .

First time I have used the yard vice ,







 much better grinding out side , needs two mods , it's about 2" to high and it needs somewhere to hand a grinder     .

Got a tad more done today ,was going great guns up until I pulled a muscle in my back   , so I will post this for now    , first job this morning was to cut down the yard vice stand

by 2" and add two bits of flat bar so that I can hang gear from them . 

 
 


Then another job I have been meaning to do is add a hook to the 8" grinder , this was made from a bolt . 

 





That done I could get back on with the forge , I am using up my old rusty stock on this project , this was cleaned up with the above grinder . 




and cut and welded into this . 




this being to support the hood and back panel . 




deciding whether to bolt or weld it to the hearth

I like the bars for hanging tools. I keep thinking I need to build myself a hammer stand. My hammers are in the bottom drawer of my tool chest, and they're slowly destroying the slides b/c they're too heavy.
