Afternoon Chaps

Made a start on the fan casing today , I should get it all made out of this sheet of 1.5mm thick sheet of steel .





First job cut it up a bit .



Next mark out and cut the sides



Drill a few holes for inserts ,turn up inserts at this stage the hole in the middle is undersized .




Weld in position .




I think I will treat myself to a proper TIG setup next year.




Next up roll the outer rapper , I used my CNC rolls for this




Short piece welded on to form the return .




Then tacked to the first side .



Fully welded ,both sides .



Cleaned up and holed drilled and tapped in inserts .

Very nice Rob.. Yours is ten times the forge I built.


I built a take along forge, I was hoping to take mine to a hammering and have a smith that knew how use a forge teach me the basics so I could get on with forging without wasting coal..

Rob can you buy seacoal?

I don't think we here in the states can even buy it, from reading about it it sounds like very hot clean burning coal. Have you ever seen any doubleboost, it's supposed be fist size and very shiny black in color.

Tackit ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, now thats a cracking forge thoroughly enjoyed that slide show with my morning brew photo 28 /78 , clever ,you sure can fabricate ,love the wheels .



As John mentioned I could pick see coal from the beach if I wanted , but I just buy bags of coke form the coal merchants ,its only about £6 a bag . Sea coal is just normal coal that gets eroded from coal seams that are close to the surface of the sea bed or from the tailings from coal mines that get dumped at see , and ends up washed up on the shore line . I probable will be down there later today ,so I will see what I can fined .

Hi Ed , I used an angle grinder with a zip disc in it to cut the larger sheet into 4 , then I used my 10" bench shear to cut the sides out .

Top job Rob , should be in fitting with the forge itself, nice and heavy duty
