Just fitted a 12" gauge to my 7/12, as I have many mods on the lathe It was always going to be a challenge. but I think this is OK.
Works just fine full 12" readout-- repeatability is perfect--out of the way.

Nicely done Brian. That looks like the same scale I mounted on my shaper.

Brian, how is the read head attached to the carriage?

It has a "T" attached to the bottom of the apron with the leg of the "T" going backwards thro the Legs of the bed, the space between rhe bed lags is 13" so a 1" wide "T"leg gets 12" movement
You can just see the head of rhe "T" in the first Photo.
