Here's a pic of the stock on my Steven's with just two coats of Tung oil. I like to leave a bit of the grain showing so it looks like wood. I'll probably put a couple more coats on when everything is finished.

here's one of the pieces that I'm trying to make its still got a lot of sanding left in it, but I think you'll get the Idea wish the butt stock had some of this character.

Some very nice bits of wood there
Years ago I had a nice .410 shot gun with a very plain beech stock
A gun smith friend of mine stripped off the varnish
Pus some marks on the wood with a maker pen burned it in a few places
Stained it then finished it with oil
The transformation was amazing
You still can not beat walnut for a gun stock

Looking good David.

That's the nice thing about oil. You can oil a part as you shape it to see how it's coming along.
