I don't know much about the Mitutoyo one, sorry. It sure is a nice one, and probably best used on a height gauge for comparative measurements.

If you love looking at tools I'll post some pictures of all the radius gauges and other oddball stuff I have. I'm just not sure where, so should I start yet another thread for "hand tools" like that?

Ken,

I'll see if I can find more information on the Mitutoyo universal DTI.

"Other measuring tools" would be a good thread to start in the metrology section.

Agreed, Ed.

I'll try and get over to my dad's shop tomorrow and get photos of the radius gauge sets, scales, combination squares, solid squares, long travel indicators, telescopic bore gauges, small hole gauges, and much more that I have.

Here is my one and only DTI and was the first precision metrology tool that I purchased when I got my lathe. It is a Starrett 711 last word indicator, reading .005". I spent a lot of time searching and reading about DTIs and I saw that the 711 is loved by many and loathed by many! All the Interapids were going way above my budget and I didn't see many Mitutoyo ones at that time. I decided to take the plunge on the 711 after reading the information on the Long Island Indicator web site and speaking to one of the owners.

So far I have only used it to centre stock in my 4-jaw and to measure the play in my spindle, and I haven't had any issues yet. I picked up a kit in the red case with foam insert that was missing one item, (which may be the surface gauge attachment but I'm not sure) for $65 including shipping to Aus.

I don't see anything of consquence missing there, Darren.

When I had one of those kits (bought new), it was the swivel on top that I busted twice. It wouldn't tighten up enough to be reliable, and trying to get it tighter just blew it apart. I bought the third one and sold the set. It's not a bad indicator, millions of them are in use. It's just not for the ham-fisted guys like me.

Darren,

Did you drop a zero on the stated "reading"?

My 711 has a range of 30 thou with graduations of 001". The 1 thou marks are quite far apart so sharp eyes could prolly guesstimate around ¼ thou.

I just picked up this Federal Testmaster T-2 from Ken for $40. I has .0001" resolution and should come in handy. I did try to swap it with his Starrett 709 but it didn't fit into the box Big Grin

I got a B&S DTI at a flea market for $10US. The DTI itself was still sealed in a plastic bag,

I think some of the acessories were missing.
