I am a computer dummy can't get it to work, sure would like to. Unzipped to c:/ TOOL LOG put the shortcut on computer click it opens access gives lots of choices all of which mean nothing to a computer dummy. tom

Hi Tom. When it opens, it should automatically load the form into which data is entered. I'm unsure what options you are getting.

Can you post a screen shot (Ctrl+PrtScn to capture, Ctrl+V to paste) on here, so I can see what you are seeing? If this doesn't work (I'm unsure if the forum will let you do this), PM and I'll give you my email address, as you can dump a screen shot into an email.

I'm at work right now and this machine doesn't have Access on it, otherwise I would download it and test it here. It could be that I have stuffed something up.

I finally got around to running the program and it looks like it'll be very nice to use. I haven't had a chance to play with it much but it sure must have taken some serious time to get all of that functionality into it.

Hi Tom - I placed it on an old machine running Access 2000 and whilst it did load straight up, it didn't run as I wanted it to. For example, the images didn't show and the browse file function didn't work either. However, it may be the machine as it is old and slow and threw several virtual memory errors. At one point I wanted to beat it to death with its own mouse

I'm slammed at the moment but I plan to put Access 2000 on one of my better machines and see if that makes a difference. However, I just noticed that the database window shows this as being an Access 2000 format database.

I wonder if the file that opens the main data entry form failed to run. In which case it could be a macro issue. Do you get an security warning? If so, what happens if you click the OK / Open button? There is nothing posing a security risk but Windows is set to prevent these from running as a default.

Here are the various Macro Security pop ups:
   

To change these settings, open Access and click Tools on the top menu. Select Macro and then Security. You will get three options. High, Medium and Low. I wonder if yours is set to High. If so, select Medium or Low.

   

If you are getting the database to load but the main data entry form is not opening, you may be seeing the main database window (see below). If you just get a blank window, press F11 and the window may appear. If you see this, ensure that the Form tab on the side is selected and then double click frmTool_Log and you should be good to go.

If this still does not fix the problem you are having, please write down exactly what you see when you double click on the "C:\Tool Log" short cut. Just to ensure there has been no issue with your short cut. Please double click directly on the Tool Log database file (C:\Tool Log\Data\Tool Log.mdb).

I hope this helps Tom. Perhaps one of the others will respond as to whether they have had any issues. I could have stuffed something up!

Thanks Ed - I'm relieved that you got it to work. I hoping we can get it to work for Tom now. I've been playing with it for a couple of years. Little bit here and there, also lots of down time. There are still some features I want to incorporate and I'm sure someone may even add functionality of their own (which I Hope they will share).

will this run on Access 2003? That's the newest I think I have. I haven't tried it yet, but will give it a whirl soon.

I played with this some more today and once you get used to it, it's not too bad to use. But you must read the manual Darren supplied or you risk frustration.

I'm running this with Access 2010 just as an FYI.

Once I get more comfortable with running this, I may attempt to port it to LibreOffice.

I think the complicated part is entering all the manufacturer names, storage locations etc, as these are looked up and added to each record. My suggestion is to populate these tables first. Once done it is much easier and more streamlined to enter the tools and equipment.

Have you added any pictures or files yet? Sizing the pics can be a little tricky but there are free programmes out there to do that.

What about the search filter?

Was the manual easy enough to follow and understand or does it need more work? Of course, it makes perfect sense to me but I know it may not for others!

The not so obvious part is when you add a manufacturer, for example, by double clicking in the field there is no "Save" button. I still don't know how it saves a new entry but I did add some new manufacturers to the list successfully but they wouldn't show up in the list until I closed the database and then opened it again.

I did add some pictures. That's the easy part once you read the manual. I use GIMP to resize my pictures.

I have not used the search function yet.

I think a more detailed explanation of adding new data to the lists would help a lot. It doesn't need to be long and drawn out. Just a play by play of adding an item to a list including all of the mouse clicks and key presses would be more than adequate.

Thanks for making this available. I can see a lot of work went in to creating the database.
