I also have a comment box for each tool, into which you can keep a record of loan in/out. Less likely to be accidently rubbed off of a white board. Also useful for service/repair history or keeping a list of consumable items.
Aside from the search engine, one of the most used features that I built into the database is the ability to link to documents such as user manuals, exploded diagrams, parts lists etc. Whenever I get a tool or piece of equipment that has documentation, I scan it and save it. No more lost, torn or soiled pages to deal with.
EDIT: I've removed the link to the manual, as I realised that I needed to update it. I also need to update the database files as well. I had forgotten that I had made some minor adjustments. I'll do this over the next couple of days.
