I'm looking at some of these on gaging.com. The plungers are tapered from very slightly to more pronounced depending on it's range. When you put it into the hole to me measured the tapered pin only goes in so far but you keep going until the cylinder that the plunger comes out of hits the body of the part with the hole. Then read the gage.
Take a micrometer and measure the diameter at both ends of the plunger. That will be the range it measures.
