A spinoff project was to mill my MTGNR 32x32 carbide insert holder to fit in a QCTP toolholder.




Chamfered the nut at 45 degrees.

Had a play day yesterday, went with a couple of buddies to a Forestry Expo a couple of hours from here. Lots of neat and BIG equipment. They had a skidder there that was huge, grapples had to be 8 feet long and Im sure you could have parked two pickups between them. Lots of firewood processors to admire and sawmills to ogle over. Seams most now use ceramic or powdered metal blade guides. Need to look into that.
Anyway back to work.
So far the case has no fasteners.


The writing surface / front lid might warp so I edge banded it to hold it flat. The joint gets the centre glued then pins hold the ends in but allow movement for changes in humidity.

I don't know why the guy doesn't just go to IKEA and buy a desk. The quality looks about the same and I am sure it would be cheaper. :)

What I don't like about working with wood is you have to be careful to keep your hands and work surfaces clean.

Nothing bought at Ikea is going to approach the quality of workmanship of Greg's projects, but more importantly there's no other way to be able to stand back and say "I made it."

The bought stuff is always a comprise on some dimension, choice of material, assembly method, feature or finish. I wish I had the shop, tools and skills to do it. My son Brian is well on his way to having just that and when I get my machine shop moved out of his house it'll get even better.

Of course this will be a work of ark and a family heirloom. I just want Greg to finish his firewood processor and quit dinking with wood! He knows I was joking about the quality and I am just envious that I can not work well in wood. If I would build that desk it would look like a wood pallet.

Greg, that is a mighty fine looking project! I, too, share the woodworking envy. It seems like it ought to be easier than machine work, but in fact, I find it much more difficult.
