That's a very well designed and welded together hearth Rob, it's going to interesting and fun seeing it when it's all done. Are you going to build a sheet metal hood and chimney for it?

Not a criticism but a question: was there a reason why you didn't do the cut outs prior to welding it together? I have a common reason for such things and it is called oversight I'm just wondering if your reason differs?

I must say that I do enjoy your build threads.

Hi Mick ,aye its slow progress. It will be fixed in one corner of the shop , opposite the furnace .

Hi Tackit , Yes I will be making a hood and also a blower for it , still quite a bit to do .

Hi Darren , no worries ,fare question and I would not of took it as a criticism we all work in different ways , The reason I did not do the cut outs first is that I am pulling the design out of my arse and making it up as I go , and was humming and haring weather or not to put the cut outs in ,so thought I would do them last as I could chalk them on and see if I liked them,size,position etc , and it was no big deal to do them last.

Ah yes - I neglected to mention that one. I have the same approach on a number of projects, including the wheel rim forge I made.

Probably the best coal forge I've ever seen was a mobile one posted on IForgeIron. It was just a flat piece of 1/4" checkerplate with a thicker steel fire pot in the middle. No need for sides to get in the way of heating the middle of longer bars, the checkerplate keeps the coal in place.

Well a tad more done tonight , made a start on the fire pot , this is made from some 1/2 BMS ,STUCK together .



Tacked





Hole in the bottom will be machined in after welding ,as it would not stay round if it were machined in first then welded .




Just needs a flange welded on around the top .


Time for a Cuppa .
