Yep, the spindle is ground to fit them, the dead centre is formed on a 5c mount. Need to make a pin spanner to fit the chucks to tighten and remove. Haven't seen a picture of one, could you post a picture of yours Tom, would be appreciated.

Tackled repairing the damaged pinion that drives the carriage.
Cut a new gear from a salvaged strut rod. Machined away the damaged gear. Did a shrink fit with 1 1/2 thou interference. For reassurance I drilled the joint a put a 1/16 spring pin in to act as a key. Finished assembling it today. Was a little worried the new cut gear might put a pattern in the surface if the teeth weren't formed correctly, but all seams to be fine. Im getting about 1/2 thou taper in 8 inches. guess the tailstock needs tweaked. The silence of it is a little unnerving after being accustomed to gear head lathes. All in all looks like its going to be a good machine. Thanks for watching

Greg,
You did an absolutely AMAZING job with the refurbishing! Your attention to detail is tops, and it looks as good or better than factory new. Thanks given by: f350ca

Nice use of soft jaws.
You did an amazing job of refurbishing the lathe in such a short period of time. Ed

Guess it was only a two week turn around Ed, seemed a lot longer.

Greg,
I'll send you a drawing of the wrench. There is no adjustment on the tailstock, it's ground to fit. You probably just need to clean and lube the front of the way and matching dovetail. Tom

Thats what I thought Tom, but this one has an adjustable gib on the front side. Im assuming its to make adjustments.
Thanks on the wrench offer. Tried threading with it today, Oh My God, there's going to be treads on everything I can think of.

Well I'll be damned, there is a gib under there. Guess it's been a while since I've looked. Nev-r-mind.
Yes, you will LOVE it for threading. I hardly ever drag the dies out any more because it's nearly as quick and a heck of a lot more fun to single point them on the Hardinge. Tom |
