starrett 722 caliper battery type?

Mike, I have a Mitutoyo digital mic #293-705 and it eats it's SR44 batteries too. I've taken to removing the battery when not in use and in so doing it gets used less frequently. Must be a design flaw which requires battery power for the memory even if there's just zeros in the memory.
My first Mitutoyo digital caliper had an automatic shut down feature. If the caliper wasn't used within a certain period it turned itself off, batteries lasted forever.

my other digital stuff has manual off and auto off but i took to taking the battery out in them as well as i found they seemed to die quickly if you didnt. same thing with snap on digital torque wrenches.

I have Starrett digital electronic calipers No.721 6" and No.723 9" digital electronic depth gauge No.753, and digital electronic micrometer. Only the depth gauge and 9" caliper are working. The micrometer can be fixed by Starrett (for the second time in two years), but I haven't found time to bring it up to them. The 6" caliper is deemed dead and cannot be saved, according to Starrett. It's a paperweight, and the reason that I've started the move to all Mitutoyo for digital electronic measuring tools.



I've had two of the Mitutoyo 6" Absolute digtial electronic calipers for years. One I gave to my dad some 8 yeears ago, and it's still on the same batteries. I gave it to him because the scale cover started peeling up at the solid jaw end, then bought myself a new one. Now my new one has the same problem, and they both still work as good as the day I got them. I've since added Mitutoyo 293-348 0-1" (friction thimble) and 293-345 (ratchet thimble) 1-2" digital electronic micrometers to replace the Starrett when they fail. I don't even bother picking up the Starett micrometers lately.




I got the 0-1" off a guy in Vermont from a Craigslist ad for $100. The 1-2" was a better deal for $65 on eBay. With some 11 micrometers just in the 0-1" range I shouldn't want for micrometers, but I still do. I just really want them to work when I pick them up!

it works. i didnt purchase the new batteries i just loosened some screws up and it let me slip in a couple of thicker batteries that i did have.

now i have a dilemma that popped into my head in the process. do i really need to put more batteries in to a landfill?

we all could do a little more...or do a little less is the right wording. it can be rather amazing driving around on trash collection day and seeing the amount of stuff thrown away by a household.

im not a fan of the digital because its battery powered and even at my age an failing eyes i like the vernier...caliper, pi micrometer. i think it tends to help keep the mind sharper.

i would post up mine but photobucket changed things up and i cant figure out how to. i probably have 30-40 micrometers myself.

The batteries came in.

While searching online for a user manual for the 722 (you would think two buttons couldnt be that tough to figure out but my friends fowler gives me fits too) i came across a pretty simple solution to the battery drain. The photos are in Rich Carlstedt's post. Now i have a chance to use what i once thought were unusably small endmills.

If anybody has papers for this caliper or that might have better luck locating them let me know. Its actually a rather nice tool.
