Heck of a lead. You risk busting your lathe. It should be done with a vertical head and an endmill, the table doesn't need to swivel but you would need to gear the feedscrew to a home-brewed indexer. The gear ratio determined by the OD and lead.

But you said fast. It sounds like a file and hacksaw would get it out the door today.

Without all the fancy set-ups and equipment, just calculate the lead of the helix in thousandths per degree, mount the part in a dividing head and step mill the slot by rotating the dividing head and stepping the end mill over the required amount. Obviously the more steps you take, the better the slot will look.

What's wrong with the piece now is that open end broke off? Reminds me of the early Harley through the handle bar internal throttle 73 and back.

RE: mmm im stuck - oldskoolron - 08-26-2016

no pepi its as new I got my son to get a internal throttle setup from an indian store on fleabay it works well but it has all the wrong sizes for triumph an Harley so I want/need to make my own
will be starting to have a crack at making it next week as im making one of the ball turning tools .similar to most but im putting a wheel bearing setup between the cross bed bracket and the tool holder most the others are metal to metal and it gives me something new to try seeing im no where as educaredas most in here
cheers

Another suggestion is that you fabricate it. The sides of the slot form straight lines if they are unrolled. You'd simply cut out a sheet of flat stock which looks like this: // and roll it up, then weld in a short filler piece to close one end.

Hello

Its easy.... Figure your lead out (Google "thread lead" for definition) now mark up your piece with Dykem / layout fluid or sharpie, scratch mark your stop and start, now cut a piece of paper 1/8'' wide x 6'' long, place the start of the paper on the stop mark on your piece, now wrap the paper around and connect it to the start, with the wrapped paper still on scratch the edge of the paper and follow the helix.

Now you have a center line, all you have to do now is figure out the slot width divide that in half lay it out on the center line and mark the edges out, now its all marked out take a small thin grind / cutter disk on a dremell type tool and cut it out.

Anthony.

cheers Anthony but already done the paper thingy to get the slot I needed to get full throttle on a 43 mikuni ..I think from what you've all said ill be stuck doing the cutting with my die grinder with a cutting wheel then smooth it out cheers for all the input again fellas

RE: mmm im stuck - oldskoolron - 09-25-2016

seeing I been bit crook last few days I did my usaual lay in bed an look through a heap utube vids on how tos ect
I found this an was wondering what you all thought of it my son said if I do all the cutting ect he will weld it up or I had an offer off my cabinet maker mate who said he will come over an make it in timber if needed
so heres the links on the setup the young fella made in uk and other link on how he made it .yup its rough but it works for him .I was thinking bout using my die grinder with a tear drop shaped burr I use when porting heads
