Checking My Nuts

Yup, I was planning on drilling all the way through just in case I ever need to knock out the pins.

It's about time I got something done on this project. Not much to show but one more step done. I'll cut that piece in half and thread them individually.

Why not cut it after you thread? One less process.
Free advice is worth exactly what you payed for it.

I knew that question would be asked.  Smile

The threading tool I'll be using for threading is barely long enough to thread that 2.25" length so a crash is a real possibility. Another reason is that if I screw up the long piece I've screwed up two nuts. If I thread them individually and screw one up, I have the possibility of getting the other one right. Screwy logic, I know.  Blush

Works for me.

And you'll gain twice the experience.

But in my case it would be twice the chance of screwing up.

This was not a good day for my nuts. Bawling

First problem, I had the boring bar turned in the holder so the front below the cutting edge was rubbing. Took me a while to realize that. Didn't do much damage so I corrected that and just decided to continue on. Well, that didn't go well either. For some reason my thread passes are overlapping. I'm still scratching my head over that and haven't figured out why. I've checked the gearing and levers numerous times and they seem to be correct for 10TPI. I've ruined the first nut so I'm going to chuck up a piece of round scrap and cut an external thread and try to figure out why 10TPI threads are overlapping. Time to call it a day and take a fresh look at it tomorrow.

The chart for my lathe says for 10TPI I can use the numbers 1-8 on the half nut dial. Does that mean I can use any one of them or do I need to pick one and use only that one for the thread? I've always used the one I started with. It makes it a lot slower though waiting for the number to come around again.

On my logan the dial has gotten so hard to read (and my eyes aren't getting any better) I took a sharpie and ran it over the 1 and the corresponding line and the line it matches up with on the dial's housing. I don't care what threads I'm doing, that's where I engage the half nuts. One less thing to go wrong.
