Ed,
Does your 'half nut dial' show numbers 1 to 8 or 1 to 4?
If you use any of the numbered lines 1,2,3,4 you will be fine.
I have no idea why your manual says use any line, unless of course they could have missed out the word 'numbered'

Ed,
This is from a manual which is similar to my lathe and I know my lathe is similar to yours.
I just don't think it slipped in the jaws.

Willie,
The numbered lines surely means the lines that have a number allocated to it such as 1,2,3,4.
Ed, is saying any line (I think)
What is confusing me where you say "NUMBERED line as well" ............. as well as what?
This is what Ed said "The chart for my lathe says for 10TPI I can use the numbers 1-8 on the half nut dial."

What a kerfuffle!
Dave,
Ed wrote: 'The chart for my lathe says for 10TPI I can use the numbers 1-8 on the half nut dial.' which I took to mean that he was using the 'numbered' lines like I do (for that pitch), because he doesn't have a marked #8 line.
In his case that would be lines 1 - 3 - 5 and 7. In my case, my dial is marked with 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 with lines between also, so I would use those numbered lines (1,2,3,4) instead.
So the question remains.... which group of lines were actually being used? The numbered lines only, or all 8 of the lines?
Too bad the written word doesn't convey the same precision that our machining specs do.

Ah, thanks Willie that's cleared it up I think I'm going to have a lay down and give my brain time to recover.
So the good thing is only 4 of the lines are numbered either 1,2,3,4 or 1,3,5,7 so I still think Ed can use any line provided it has a number. Is that what you think?

BINGO!
That chart you posted is the same one I go by Dave.
As it shows, for cutting any pitch showing an 'N' in the table you only use the lines marked with an actual number. And another 'gotcha' on the chart is where it shows '1 - 3'. That does not mean use lines 1 through 3! (1,2,3)
It means use ONLY lines 1 -or- 3.

That's great for us, but what about Ed?

Ed, must sort himself out (just kidding Ed)
The manual is wrong/incorrect to say 1-8 because it just will not work for a 10tpi thread. It should say numbered line or in Ed's case 1,3,5,7.

Yes, but the night before.

Here's the chart. For 10TPI it says 1-8. I'm not sure how one would interpret that as meaning anything but all numbers from 1 through 8.
I'm not saying the chart is correct but until proven otherwise, I have to assume it is. For the threads I have cut, it has proven to be correct. Including the 10 TPI practice acme thread I last cut.
