In, or out?

Curious about how you folk have your tooling set up. What's in a drawer, and what's out on a shelf or pegboard?

For example:
Fractional/1-60/A-G drill index: OUT
S & D bits: OUT
Metric bits: IN
Collets: OUT
Lathe toolholders: IN
T-handle hex wrench: ?
Regular hex wrench: ?
Nutdrivers: ?
Other stuff: Taps, reamers, boring bars, wrenches, screwdrivers...

Obviously, this would change on specific jobs. But just, in general...?

We keep everything except inspection equipment in and organized.

Keeps everything in a place that everyone knows where it is, and also keeps stuff dust, oily, and coolant mist free.

With four of us working together in a small shop, it is key to be organized, but even when it was just myself, I tried to keep everything tucked away in a certain place........just for sanity reasons!

I've seen pictures of some workbenches that look like a "Where's Waldo" of tooling!

I have intentions of rearranging my shop this winter. Once that's done, I'll have the tools a little more organized and out of the shoe boxes, which the sugar mama will be happy to hear so she can have her boxes back.

I follow the f350ca (Greg) model. Since he does such great work that's the route to take.
Everything I need or use often is OUT somewhere taking up horizontal surface space from the floor up (I even use some inclined surfaces but then the stuff seeks a horizontal surface on it's own).
The advantage of having to hunt through the piles is that you come across things you were looking for recently and are relieved to know they're not gone.

Ah, yes. The old "can't find it? Buy another one to make it reappear" principle of tooling.

S & D bits: In wood bloack set on shelf by the milling machine
Metric bits: In 3rd drawer down, dad's Kennedy 295B roll-around, left hand side
Collets: In steel rack on shelf to the right of the lathe
Lathe toolholders: In a slide-out rack made by dad, under the 24x36 suface plate table, behind the lathe operator
T-handle hex wrench: No set, couple in top drawer, RH side of my Kennedy 297B roll-around
Regular hex wrench: Second drawer, RH side of my Kennedy 297B, set of combination inch, various open end metrics
Nutdrivers: None. 3/8" and 1/4" drive ratchet & socket set in above location with wrenches.
Other stuff: Taps, reamers, boring bars, wrenches, screwdrivers...Stuff in every drawer, shelf, nook and cranny


If you want to see the photos they tell a story faster, but that ends up looking like the tool gloat it is. Messy gloat (as compared to most others), but a lot of stuff in various shelves and drawers.
