You can use a hob by first putting notches in your blank. Once you have that the hob will drive the blank until it becomes a gear. A guy named Jose did a video on cutting gears with hobs and even how to make a hob. The video is good for the technique and gotchas, but that's about it. Most importantly, do NOT listen to his math and secondly do NOT pay attention to his [in]ability to count. Outside of that, it's a good video!

Thanks Pete - you're a terrible man ;)
I've avoided Grays in the past as I can generally get myself in enough strife between eBay and Gumtree, but I've just spent the last half an hour looking through that auction. Very tempting....... Steve

You know you want it Steve.
I've had to learn not to get excited about an item that still has a couple of days bidding left- I spotted a surface plate a few weeks back with $9 on it and it ended up selling for about $300. I much prefer an onsite clearing sale, people have to be prepared to invest the time to go, and not everyone who does so is interested in old iron. Either way, the market generally drives the price to an average point but sometimes you can get lucky- I picked up a dividing head for $20 a couple of years ago. One big drawback with grays is there are some unscrupulous regular sellers and there's no feedback system like ebay; I bought a walk-behind slasher last year and it turned out the seller was a scrap-metal dealer who sells stuff that people have already thrown out. Live and learn.

Hello,
I just posted this: http://lathegears.software.informer.com/ In another thread. I had the same problem, my lathe,(metric), came with only one change gear and could not do a couple of basic threads 1.75 mm pitch for one and the very first thread I needed to cut! The above program will help you find every gear combination necessary to cut what you want, find missing gears needed and generably make life easier. |
