My cell phone photos of the V-block don't do it justice. The perspective might have one think there's some serious variation of the countersinks of the holes, and perhaps a flat at top of the long edge looks wider at one end than the other. It isn't. That thing is nice. Maybe not "Moore Precision Tool Company" nice but better than any Asian import I've ever seen.

Pretty good for a hand sketch and layout with a combination square.

Thanks guys. Making that v-block showed me the level of precision that is achievable in a home shop and I have plans to make some additional set up blocks based on the ones that we used making that one.

What I am missing is a surface plate but I suppose I could set something up close and then sweep it on the actual surface grinder with a DTI mounted on the column (or anywhere the mag base will stick).

Think granite if you can't find a steel one.

I would imagine a granite one would be more stable given the temperature variations.

Absolutely correct. A steel one would be a casting with varied thicknesses throughout and that can definitely change shape under the temperature extremes you get there.

Guess on your next trip you could bring back a granite surface plate as a lap top desk.  Gee its only an 18 + hr flight from the US to Australia.  Once your legs went numb you wouldn't notice a thing.
