Clausing Mill - 8530

Hello Everyone,
Although I've been lurking around for a few weeks I am glad to say that I'm a newly registered user to this forum. Lot's of great stuff here for a beginner like myself.

I'm tearing down an 8530 mill and am stuck at removing the cross slide (y axis) from the knee. The lead screw nut under the slide prevents the part from sliding off the knee.
According to the exploded view of the assembly, it looks like the nut is press fit into the part but I am hesitant to drive the nut out. I'd rather err on the side of caution and get some knowledgeable feedback before moving forward with this part of the tear down.

I'm wondering if I'm missing something obvious or did I miss a step somewhere? Bash

Welcome aboard Michael,

Can you post a pic of the drawing, as that will help (instructions here).

I'm not familiar with the mill that you have but on my Kondia the x and y axis nuts are in a common yoke that must be removed before the saddle will come off. In order to remove the saddle, you first have to remove the knee which will then enable you to remove the yoke. Once that is done, the saddle will slide off (loosen the gib first).

The Bridgeports are the same as my Kondia but as I said, I am not familiar with your particular mill. Pictures will be a big help here.

Thanks for your reply. I am attaching the page from the manual showing an exploded view of the table/cross slide assembly. I've circled the part I am referring to. You'll see that it doesn't show any mechanical fastening which is why it it seems to be a press fit. But the configuration of the part isn't a straight shaft. I don't know enough to make an educated guess on procedure.

I'm interested in your thoughts.

Welcome Michael,
I'd be surprised if the nut was a press fit, there would be no way to align it as it was pressed in. The drawing shows a 3/8 set screw coming in from the front, would that be holding it by going into the recess.
Free advice is worth exactly what you payed for it.

OK - so very different from the Kondia and BP construction = ignore my initial post!

I'm going to concur with Greg and Ed after seeing the drawing.

Keen eye! That makes sense given the configuration of the part. The front of the slide is so caked with grease I didn't see the set screw hole. I'll give it a closer look.
