I bought a Sinpo 3 axis DRO on eBay and got it installed. A lot of finicky work is required to get all 3 scales mounted perfectly parallel to the moving parts. I lost about 1.5" of Y axis travel by mounting the X axis scale behind the table and I installed a travel limiting screw to prevent crushing the scale cover. It is visible in the pictures.
The X axis scale was the easiest as it is mounted to a machined surface. No extra work required to make spacers, just a couple of holes had to be drilled and tapped. I won't go into great detail here but will attach some pics. For the Y and Z axis scales I scraped off the paint and filler at the mounting points on the machine to get a clean metal mounting point to assure the scales never move. Some custom brackets and spacers had to be made to get the scales aligned. At some point I may completely disassemble the repaint the machine and I'll deal with the ugly spots then. For now it's function over form! I also installed a sheet rubber rear way protector and an accordion style front one. This pretty much finishes up this mill project. Now I'll put it to work and see how I like it. I have to say that the DRO is the best thing since sliced bread!!
