They both face the same way as that is the way the tool is used - facing you!

Only while zeroing the gauges to the magnet (that remains stuck at one spot on the table) is the tool swung to get gauge #2 over the same position that gauge #1 was zereod. From then on you bring both gauges onto the table, and adjust the head tramming until they read the same.

Personally I wouldn't change the indicators, the ones you have Ron are .0005" divisions with a repeatability of .0002". I think they are good enough. Thumbsup

In theory, you are right. So far though, I'm not confident that they will live up to the advertised tolerances. I will work with them a bit more but it's going to take a fair bit of "proof" to get my confidence back with them.
