Let's See Your Mill

I've wanted a horizontal milling machine for a while and now I've got one.  Sort of.  I bought it off a guy a couple of towns over who has some amazingly cool stuff.  I haven't taken any pictures yet but I saved the ones from Craigslist.  It's a Garvin No.2 Hand Mill that he believes is from 1906.  Everything moves but it obviously needs a good cleaning.  It came with the countershaft, some kind of gearbox which may have been an auto feed, and a box of cutters and extra arbors.  I predict it will keep me busy for a while.

Greetings all from Leicester UK, Some of you may remember, I recently acquired a Lathe er "Lets see you Lathe, page 19"

well, I have been fortunate enough to stumble upon a Mill to compliment it. Again, free, except a few beer tokens bribing friends to help me move it, from what seemed like the most inhospitality place known to man.

Its in my workshop now... and ive commenced the cleaning!!!, and ordered a vfd.



it also came with the slotting/shaping head that attaches to the back of the turret.

Also, I found quite interesting, its made by a company called "adcock and shipley" who were a Leicester based firm many years ago. Its stamped 1962 and was indeed made in Leicester. Unfortunately the factory has long since gone and is now a place far from the british manufacturing hub it once was. In-fact if you stood where the factory was and closed your eyes and just listened, you could believe you were somewhere in poland! but thats another story.


I've got a lot to learn, but I'm so pleased to at-last own my own mill. So gentlemen, charge your glasses... My Bridgeport

Nice. What size table is that? Looks like maybe a 9x42.

Nice mills both of em... Horiz is real deal vintage should be allot fun fixing her up... that brige port is identical to 3 machines ive worked on . One was butchered I think J1 series belt? the J and M were older right ?
Id like to ask did you try putting her in back gear ...? and if so that's half the battle should be a nice machine when your done fixing her up .

Btw At my current job we have a 1961 2J BP that I had head re serviced 4 years ago .. The guy who came was so impressed with the whole machine said that head will still be running when we BOTH retire.
This machine is Tits the ways are still burnished and its never seen any steel Hogging on it that I know of since it was purchased.
I work for private Co for 15 years and we do mostly plastic and alum mods for there product line.

Congratulations on your acquisition.

Now I am jealous I have been looking for a Bridgeport for years thought I had a chance to buy one from a Vocational School I was taking a class at but they had to trade it in with a company and could not sell it to me. I am sure they got a lot less than I would have been willing to give them. Since I have bought a 18" Jet Mill/Drill but cranking the head up and down is a real PITA.

KingCreaky, I live right next to Leicester. Did you guys name your town after it?  

This is the text from Craighslist:

"For Sale: Garvin #2 Hand Milling Machine...project. Could use a little cleaning and lubrication. Cranks on the X and Y axis...lever handle on the Z axis. An old production machine from about 1906. Also included is a motor drive with flat belt pulley, gear box and electric motor, 3 extra arbors and a box of cutters. I bought this a while ago, but I have too many projects, and it has just been taking up space. Asking $ 250.00 . Please reply with phone number and I will call you back. Thanks for looking."

Actually, he let me have it for $200.00 and I paid hm $40.00 to help me move it.  Or I paid $240.00 and he helped me move it because he's such a nice guy.

The gentleman that I bought it from has a fantastic collection of old machines.  I'd like to go back there sometime and photograph them.  He's a machinist at a fairly prestigious technical university.  His machines date back to the 1850s.  They are in his two car garage, the basement of his garage, and another room.  They  all seemed to be well maintained and very well equipped.  He also seemed to be very knowledgeable.

Done deal talked w/Mattie today PM-932M-PDF 2 left one held its on its way..... im upgrading mill next week .Talked with Frankie tonight 2 hrs .......ole piazzao getting 220v for $250 don't need to upgrade box to 200 amps

Here's my solution to that.

   

Just gotta remember to unlock the head before hitting the "up" or "down" switch. And, remember to lock it afterwards.
