your right melt temp does have a lot to do with surface finish, the problem with the last pour I did is that its got a nice shiny finish on one side and dull on the other, that I think is coming from my sand still having too much oil in it.

pour temp is also critical in pouring thin castings and getting them to fill, cause they will choke off on you.

No I don't have a shrink rule, they want to much for them and not many places carry them from what I have seen. Most of the casting that I do I don't have to worry about shrinkage as a rule the one thing I do have to watch out for is the shrink pockets I have been getting where the casting isn't getting feed enough metal from the Shrink Bob as it cools, but I know what the problem is "its me" not cutting the gates big enough to all the part to pull metal in as it cools.
