Not a good idea at eye level

I've got a brass hammer that looks like Steve's - again. I need to chuck it up in the lathe and trim off the mushroom heads - again. Big Grin
Luckily I don't need it for the mill. Smile

Hammer/punch/chisel heads that are mushroomed and split are dangerous. I'm already carrying shrapnel around in one wrist. I don't need any more. Happyno

So I have this cylindrical piece and need to know what's the best way to bore a 1/2" hole to about .990" deep. How can I hold this in either the lathe or mill to bore that hole? I'd prefer using the lathe but I'll use whatever is the safest. Comments welcomed, please. Happyyes

four jaw chuck on the lathe would be the way I would do it if I was going to do it in the lathe, otherwise clamp it up in the mill vise center up on it and drill it out to depth then ream to .500

No more comments on how to do this? My concern is how to hold a round object firm enough to prevent it from turning when I start boring the hole. Maybe my concern is unfounded?

Ed,

It'll hold in the vise ok if you clamp on the round surface, but it might leave marks. I would put the flat end against the solid jaw and clamp on the square end. A piece of paper between the solid jaw and the part will keep it from moving if you are concerned. And be sure to center it in the vise so it clamps squarely.

you guys are very ambitious, either that or I'm lazy, because I bought my drawbar wrench/hammer from Enco for $12.

I'd say your concern is unfounded if held in the four jaw chuck on your lathe.

Jack,

I'm not that ambitious but I do like doing tool projects so for me it's both challenging and fun. Also, the drawbar on my mill has a 17mm hex so I couldn't get it from Enco if I wanted to. Besides, you can never have enough hammers. Smile

Ah, I hadn't thought of holding it that way. That might be the ticket. Less chance of scuffing up the piece.

Thanks!
