Doing a bit of a search on this, one claims muriatic acid is a no-no, another guy claims straight full strength vinegar works good.

Would expect any acid that reacts with iron would work.
Free advice is worth exactly what you payed for it.

Water will do the same thing, leave your old files out in the garden for a week or two and the cutting edge will be oxidized away works the same way as acid only slower.

I have my favorite files that i use all the time and i clean with a file card regularly then i wrap in rags and store, banging files around in a draw with other files next to them will blunt them pretty quick. I have purchased files from auctions for pennies and done the garden thing, its been very effective. Big Grin

Hmmm, good point. I shouldn't respond to posts after consuming a home brew. Chin

Well if you think of it this way if the edge is dull you have no choice but to remove material to reveal a new edge, that goes for any cutting tool.

Although i take care of files, endmills, drills etc i still consider them all consumables eventually they will be rendered useless through use, you have inadvertently fettled them away to nothing.
