Different design but the same concept.
I just can't hold a consistent angle by hand using regular bench stones. If I get lucky and get a sharp edge, I end up rounding it over trying to refine it. Much less aggravating for me to "cheat" by using something to hold the angles for me.
I bought one of the original Lansky sharpeners when they first came out a long time ago. But it was made so cheaply with sloppy tolerances it really couldn't hold a consistent angle. Great idea but no where near as accurate and versatile as what you can buy today.
