Screw the lock nuts back on the spindle first to save the threads in case of an errant hammer swing though. If I remember correctly my original bearings weren't that tight of a fit on mine which was part of the problem in the first place.
I'm sure glad I didn't throw away the serrated jaws for my bench vise like I was going to do the other day. They came in handy for this. I at least got it started coming off using the vise as you suggested but then no more progress. So I set it back up in my original configuration and started beating on it and its' coming but very slowly. I aborted and I'll wait for the bearing remover that will be here from Amazon tomorrow morning.
