Back in the early 1980s my dad acquired a Thompson Contender with a rare factory .45 long Colt / .410 barrel, The recoil was substantial when used with a shotgun shell. As I understand, they were discontinued because they were illegal in California and some other States. My dad eventually sold it for a hefty price to a gun shop.
