The knobs for the step blocks are made of one piece of brass. Maybe that decorative circle on the top is fooling you into thinking it's a two-piece part. I put that in with a 'V' shaped tool bit just for decoration.

The larger knob (front and center) on his indexer tail stock, locks the quill into position.
And the knobs on his step blocks have a decorative ring groove on on top, that almost looks like the knobs are two parts pressed together. They are actually one solid piece of material, and the ring(s) seen are only grooves cut into the ends to enhance their looks.
