Mount your indicator, zero it, turn the crank exactly one turn and see how far it moves then divide that number into 1. Let's say it moved .100, so your dial would have 100 marks representing .001 each, and 1/.100 = 10 TPI.
It's good to double check. Imported machines have a tendency to use metric screws with a yankee dial and they'll be off a tad.
