Ed - as Ken pointed out it is a add in of mine. I wanted to keep the bottom shelf separate and adding in that cross member also gives me the anchoring point for the piece of mesh that will occupy one of the three bottom sections for odd size stock.
At first I wasn't going to worry about putting wood into the front section where the stock stands upright. However, given that I got plenty of free off-cuts from my friends timber flooring business, I decided to put them in the front as well.
Once I get the mesh tacked in, all it needs is a lick of paint.
